The NHL’s official helmet will be unveiled next month, and the first thing to look for is its distinctive shape.
The NHL’s helmet will sport a futuristic design inspired by fighter pilot helmets from the 1980s, according to NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly.
The futuristic design features a round helmet that sits over the faceplate.
The helmet will also feature a high-visibility visor, and a sleek design that looks like an air bag, according a source familiar with the helmet design.
The fighter pilot style helmet will include an airbag that is activated by a lightbulb in the helmet, the source said.
The hockey helmet has also been designed to work with other helmet types, such as a standard helmet, as well as the head protection worn by professional hockey players, the NHL said in a release.
The new helmet will debut at the 2017 All-Star Game in Philadelphia on Jan. 20.
